In the NLHR business model, donor dollars have twice the impact because, rather than funding board or buildings, we reimburse the costs of feed, hay, farrier and vet services only. We leverage the infrastructure of existing barns, and so avoid the costs of buildings and operations ourselves. At the same time, we reward these farms’ rescue work by minimizing out-of-pocket expenses for enrolled rescues they take in.

What’s more, Large Donor gifts don’t just go toward the short-term expenses of rescue horse care, but actually build an endowment. An endowment generates interest income from investment, and then only the interest earned is spent, so that the endowment itself is preserved and can keep re-generating interest income each year, which can in turn be used again to aid the horses. That way, large gifts keep on giving each and every year, as the principal re-earns interest each new year. Large Donor gifts starting at $10,000 build the NLHR endowment, and include a stall being named in your honor, as well as an optional visit or stay in a Guest House where you can meet and greet a rescued horse who’s directly benefiting from your generosity. Since NLHR is a 501c3 organization, all gifts large and small are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law. When NLHR’s $4M endowment goal is reached, not only will 60 horses be aided every year, but an estimated $50,000 per year will be allocated for education and outreach in collaboration with sister organizations, to help prevent equine crises in the first place.
