There are a lot of stars in a Northern Lights sky; here are some of ours.
Founder, Executive Director
Joy is the founder of NLHR, having realized a lifelong passion of doing right by these magnificent creatures that we call friend and yet somehow cast aside when they’re no longer useful or convenient. Ever since she was a little girl in 4H, where a horse formerly in her care later starved to death, she’s been laying the groundwork for founding collaborator Moment’s Peace Farm, and now Northern Lights Horse Rescue. As Executive Director of NLHR, Joy is responsible for day-to-day operations and realizing the vision for the organization. Contact Joy with any ideas or feedback you may have.
President, Board of Directors
Lynne is expanding her lifelong interest in horses, taking riding lessons and caring for Equine Ambassador Shadow on the weekend, grooming and doing groundwork to help him maintain his fitness. She is also an avid fitness and sports enthusiast, part time teacher, and busy mom of three.
Treasurer, Board of Directors
Emily joined the Board of Directors for NLHR in September of 2016. She is the current Treasurer. Emily has been involved with horses since she was young. She grew up in the Dirigo Pony Club, obtaining her C-1 Rating and participating in 3-day events with her trusted Thoroughbred companion, Norman. Horses have been a staple throughout Emily’s life and she currently owns a horse in the area near NLHR’s founding collaborative farm, Moment’s Peace Farm. Supporting NLHR gives meaning to Emily’s involvement with horses and allows her to fulfill a passion that has been within her for her entire life.
Vice President and Secretary, Board of Directors
Andrea is a committed former horse owner, having stood by her trusted companion through the decades even when life changed and things got busy. Now she is a volunteer care provider for Shadow, our Equine Ambassador, with Lynne. She remains an equine enthusiast as well as an art director, parent, and high school sports fan.
Charter Member, Advisor
Kristin is the Barn Manager at founding collaborative farm Moment’s Peace Farm. A long-time horse enthusiast, Kristin has been involved with horses since childhood, owns two of her own, and is a farrier for horses in Maine. She is also a horse-sitter who vacationing equestrians in the area rely upon to keep their horses cared for while they’re away. As a Charter Member, Kristin is an invaluable resource to NLHR as an equine expert handler, farm and horse evaluator, and advisor to the board.
Charter Member, Advisor
Peter is best friend to Shadow, our Equine Ambassador. He has developed expertise in caring for aging and at-risk horses especially, where increased attention to dietary needs is required, along with the unfortunate but necessary navigation through the occasional crisis due to illness. As a Charter Member, Peter is a farm and horse evaluator and advisor to the board.
Elizabeth is the NLHR marketing director. She owns two horses who are both rescues themselves. She has been riding since the age of 2 in dressage & jumping, and is a lifetime animal lover and social media expert.
Our first Equine Ambassador, and inspiration for NLHR
Shadow was on the brink of death when the stars aligned to bring him to member farm Moment’s Peace Farm. He lived with us for his remaining years, enjoying plenty of good mash, hay, medical support, fresh air, sunshine, and dedicated pasture and stall space so he could just be a horse, worry-free. He went from looking like a creature not-quite-equine to a thing of beauty when he did his groundwork, once he had the support he needed. His beautiful spirit remains our true Northern Light.
