Founding Executive Director
Joy is the founder of NLHR, having realized a lifelong passion of doing right by these magnificent creatures that we call friend and yet somehow cast aside when they’re no longer useful or convenient. Ever since she was a little girl in 4H, where a horse formerly in her care later starved to death, she’s been laying the groundwork for founding collaborator Moment’s Peace Farm, and now Northern Lights Horse Rescue. As Executive Director of NLHR, Joy is responsible for the vision for the organization. Contact Joy with questions or feedback you may have about NLHR strategy.
Board Member, Marketing Director
Elizabeth is an equine enthusiast, NLHR marketing director, and barn manager. She owns at least two horses at any one time, who are both rescues themselves, and is responsible for more. She not only handles day-to-day, hands-on care, but drives our social media presence on FacesBook, which is the cornerstone of our collaborative network. The NLHR network is how we find resources, and help find homes for horses in need in New England, which is our mission. Contact Elizabeth about any resources you may have that can help, if you’re interested in adopting a horse in need, or have ideas that can aid our cause.
Board Member at Large
Peter is Facilities Director of founding member farm Moment’s Peace Farm. He was also the best friend of Shadow, our first Equine Ambassador, who inspired the creation of NLHR.
Peter developed expertise in caring for aging and at-risk horses especially, who need increased attention to dietary needs. Peter also helps navigate the unfortunate but necessary navigation through the occasional crisis due to illness of rescue horses who live at his own farm.
Charter Member, Advisor
Kristin is the farrier and former Barn Manager of founding collaborative farm Moment’s Peace Farm.
A long-time horse enthusiast, Kristin has been involved with horses since childhood, owns three of her own, and is a valued farrier for many farms in southern and central Maine. As a Charter Member, Kristin is an invaluable resource to NLHR as an equine expert handler, farm and horse evaluator, and advisor to the board.
Our first Equine Ambassador, and inspiration for NLHR
Shadow was on the brink of death when the stars aligned to bring him to member farm Moment’s Peace Farm. He lived with us for his remaining years, enjoying plenty of good mash, hay, medical support, fresh air, sunshine, and dedicated pasture and stall space so he could just be a horse, worry-free. He went from looking like a creature not-quite-equine to a thing of beauty when he did his groundwork, once he had the support he needed. His beautiful spirit remains our true Northern Light.
